Multiple Jobs: Resume Writing FAQs

Several kinds of experience on a resume without looking flighty?

Question:

I have been a telemarketer, worked in a factory and been a cashier most of the time I've worked. How would I use this experience in a resume without looking like I went from one job to another with no consistent work history? I want to use my prior work experience to my benefit for a sales or desk job such as a secretary but find myself stuck as for how to word anything on my resume, not to mention how I should list all my work experience. Please help me. Also, thank you for you time.

Answer:

Identify the tasks that you performed in each position. Then, on your resume highlight the tasks that have prepared you for the desk job (typing, phone communication, etc).  The best option is to use a Functional Resume Layout as this format focuses less on employment and more on skills.  Also, you can cover the desire for a career change in the cover letter.  Try using the free resume tips and examples as a guide to get started.  If you are still stuck, you may consider using a professional resume service or resume builder to better position your specific qualifications.  If you need help composing your cover letter and positioning your past work experience, view our cover letter writing tips section for additional help.
